What is a water level gauge?
A water level gauge is an instrument used to automatically measure and record the water level of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, irrigation canals and other water bodies. It is also called a "liquid level gauge" or "liquid surface gauge". Its principle is to convert the change of water level into a measurable physical quantity through various sensors, thereby realizing the monitoring and recording of the water level. The following are several common types of water level gauges and their principles:
Radar water level gauge: It emits a microwave signal. When the signal encounters the water surface, a part of the signal will be reflected back. After the receiver receives the reflected signal, it calculates the distance between the water surface and the radar water level gauge according to the round-trip time of the signal, thus determining the height of the water level.
Ultrasonic water level gauge: It uses ultrasonic pulses to measure the distance from the water surface to the device and then calculates the water level. It does not contact the water surface and is less affected by water quality, being suitable for various environments.
Application scenarios of water level gauges:
Water conservancy projects: Used for water level monitoring of reservoirs, dams, rivers, lakes, irrigation areas, etc., helping water conservancy departments to reasonably arrange the scheduling and utilization of water resources and ensuring the safe operation of water conservancy projects, such as the water storage and discharge scheduling of reservoirs, and the flood control and irrigation work of rivers.
Industrial production: In industries such as chemical, electric power, food and beverage, it is used for liquid level monitoring and control of various reactors, storage tanks, boilers and other containers, ensuring the safety and stability of the production process and preventing production accidents and product quality problems caused by abnormal liquid levels.
Environmental monitoring: Monitoring the water level changes of groundwater, wetlands, oceans, etc., providing data support for environmental research and protection, such as understanding the dynamic situation of groundwater, the impact of water level changes in wetland ecosystems on vegetation and animals, and the problem of sea level rise.
Shipping and waterway management: Providing data for waterway depth measurement and lock water level control, ensuring the navigation safety and shipping efficiency of ships and preventing accidents such as ships running aground.
Municipal engineering: Used for water level monitoring of urban water supply and drainage systems, such as the water level control of water supply reservoirs, water towers, clear water ponds, sewage pumping stations, rainwater pumping stations, etc., ensuring the normal operation of urban water supply and drainage and preventing urban waterlogging.
Installation of water level gauges:
The following are the general installation steps and precautions for several common water level gauges:
Radar water level gauge:
Installation position selection: Select an open and unobstructed position, avoid having obstacles such as bridges, trees, buildings, etc. on the propagation path of the radar beam; for rivers, reservoirs, etc., it should be installed at a stable position on the shore, and the range of water level changes should be considered to ensure that it can still measure effectively when the water level is at its lowest; when installing in a manhole, pay attention to the size of the space and the structure of the wellhead to ensure that the device can be installed normally and the signal transmission is not affected.
Installation height determination: Determine the installation height of the radar water level gauge according to the measurement requirements and the actual situation on the spot. Generally, it is required that the antenna has a certain distance from the water surface to avoid the influence of water surface fluctuations on the measurement, but it should not be too high to avoid affecting the measurement accuracy.
Installation method: The radar water level gauge usually adopts bracket installation or wall-mounted installation. When installing with a bracket, ensure that the bracket is firm and stable and can bear the weight of the device and the influence of the external environment; when installing wall-mounted, select a suitable wall to ensure that the wall can bear the weight of the device and fix it according to the installation instructions.
Cable laying: When laying cables, avoid the cables being squeezed, stretched or worn by external forces, and at the same time pay attention to the waterproof and grounding of the cables to prevent the cables from getting wet and causing damage to the device or safety hazards.
Device debugging: After the installation is completed, the radar water level gauge needs to be debugged, including setting measurement parameters, calibrating the zero point and range, checking the signal strength and stability, etc., to ensure that the device can work normally and measure the water level accurately.
Ultrasonic water level gauge:
Installation position: Select a place where the water surface is relatively calm, without obvious waves and water flow interference, and at the same time avoid installing near the water inlet, water outlet or a place where a large number of bubbles are produced, so as not affect the propagation and reflection of ultrasonic waves; the installation height should be determined according to the measurement range and the on-site conditions, generally requiring that the transducer has a certain distance from the water surface, but also ensuring that the reflected signal can still be received when the water level is at its lowest.
Installation angle: The transducer of the ultrasonic water level gauge should be installed perpendicular to the water surface to ensure that the ultrasonic waves can be emitted and received vertically, improving the measurement accuracy; if the installation position has a certain inclination, the measurement results need to be corrected accordingly.
Fixed method: The ultrasonic water level gauge can be installed in the selected position by means of bracket fixation or flange connection, etc., ensuring that the installation is firm and preventing the device from shaking or displacing during the operation process.
Waterproof treatment: Waterproof treatment should be carried out on the interfaces and cable connections of the device to prevent moisture from entering the device and causing damage; for installation positions that are long-term in a humid environment or may be flooded by water, additional waterproof measures such as using waterproof covers or sealants need to be taken.
Calibration and debugging: After the installation is completed, the ultrasonic water level gauge needs to be calibrated and debugged, including setting measurement parameters, adjusting the gain and blind area, etc., to adapt to different measurement environments and requirements; at the same time, through actual measurement and comparison, verify the measurement accuracy and stability of the device.
