Principle of Measurement
PH meter is a potentiometric method to measure the PH of a solution, so the PH meter works in such a way that, in addition to measuring the PH of a solution, it can also measure the electromotive force of a battery.
The PH is the activity of hydrogen ions in a substance, and the PH is the negative of the logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions.The main measuring components of PH meter are glass electrode and reference electrode. Glass electrode is sensitive to PH and reference electrode has stable potential.If you put these two electrodes of the PH meter together in the same solution, you make a galvanic cell, and the potential of this galvanic cell is the algebraic sum of the potential of the glass electrode and the reference electrode.
The reference electrode potential of PH meter is stable, so in the case of temperature remains stable, the potential change of the galvanic cell composed of the solution and the electrode is only related to the potential of the glass electrode, and the potential of the glass electrode depends on the PH value of the solution to be measured, so through the measurement of the potential change, the PH value of the solution can be obtained.
